Whippet!

Taken from a note I made on Facebook about my Whippet. Just felt like posting it here too. I <3 my Whippet.

So you all should know my dog Bones by now with all the pictures I post of him. When I take him out I get a LOT of questions about him. Sometimes I feel like I should carry pamphlets with me when I take him out. Anyway, I’m bored so I thought I would make a note about Whippets in case anyone was curious about the breed. :)

This is a Whippet, my Whippet, Bones.

I tried to measure him properly but he didn’t want to cooperate, but he’s about 23 inches tall (which is kind of tall for a Whippet) and he weighs about 35 pounds. Whippets are medium sized dogs that are VERY often mistaken for English greyhounds. The difference between the two is their size, greyhounds are bigger!

Whippets gained recognition from the English Kennel Club in 1891. They have been used for racing for quite a while, and one cool thing about Whippets is that they are the fastest domesticated animal of their weight and can reach speeds up to 35 miles an hour.

They come in a variety of colors and have fine short hair. Since Whippets are somewhat of a rare breed, the color of their coat cannot disqualify them from shows. I think Bones would most likely be considered parti-colored as he is mostly black but he has white patches (stripe down the nose, chin, chest, and by his toes).

One thing I hear a LOT are comments about how skinny he is, sometimes people wondering if I FEED him. Folks, he eats. He eats a lot. They are built to be this thin and he has a lot of muscle from all the running he does. They LOVE to run and be active.

Living with a Whippet

While I can’t speak for all of them, after having mine for over a year there are a lot of good and interesting things to learn about them.

  • He’s a cuddler/Social puppy!

With my soon-to-be bro in law :P

While he is active, he loves to just lay around with people.. or lay on people or be up against you somehow. He will love you the second he meets you. He loves everyone! And my lil guy is good with kids as well. He has been tried and tested with a 2 year old.

  • He will counter surf if you don’t keep an eye on him.

Not really counter surfing there but chinchilla watching :P. Since he’s not tiny he can get up on tables, chairs, and get his nose up to counters. Yeah, that can be a problem.

  • Legs are injury prone (scrapes, cuts)

No pic ‘cause no one wants a pic of that.. but if anyone is going to consider the breed it’s important to know. A couple other good things to know.. regular buckle collars will not do. They can escape those. A martingale collar is best as it doesn’t choke them but they can’t just slip out of them. Also they are typically very quiet. My Bones doesn’t bark too much at all!

I can’t really think of much else but I guess I can add to it if I think of something. Soo.. there’s some info about my super awesome dog.
